12 - Mercy: Immense and Free

The Gospel tells us not what we must do, but what God's immense and free mercy has done for us.

Listen now

I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen. (1 Timothy 1:12-17)

The Apostle Paul reminded Timothy of the mercy Christ showed him, even while Paul was persecuting the early church. False teachers will try to distort the gospel, attempting to add to what Christ has already done. Christ's death is enough for the payment of sin. No additional laws, rituals, or beliefs are necessary. This is the Gospel: that Jesus Christ came to save sinners.

But what of the Law? It could never save anyone. The Law only reveals the sin in our lives and shows us our desperate need of a Savior. Paul states three facts about God's salvation that tell about Him: God is merciful, full of grace, and abundant in longsuffering. He sees no difference among sinners. He is patient, withholding His judgment, allowing time for people to come to Him and accept His loving and free salvation. Dear listener, how is it with you? Have you received Christ's provision for your desperate need?
