Martyn Lloyd-Jones: Timeless Truths

Death Is Not the End

The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ are facts of history. Because that is true, death is not the end for the Christian.

Listen

Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews. Then Paul, as his custom was, went in to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ." And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas. (Acts 17:1-4)

In this account we read facts of history - Paul's evangelistic work in Thessalonica. But beyond that, we read that Paul is preaching facts of history - the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These historical facts are prophecy fulfilled. Moreover, Christ's resurrection is proof of the Godhead. In this greatest event of history, the problem of sin was dealt with once and for all; every enemy was conquered; those who are Christ's passed from judgement into life. Death is not the end for the Christian.
