Today the unthinkable is happening: Attacks on the Bible from within what is supposed to be the Bible-believing church.
The Bible is under attack today in many places around the world.
The most publicized attacks on the Bible are coming from civil governments.
The city of Manhattan Beach, California, enacted a regulation forbidding gatherings in any private home for a religious purpose. The main target of this ban was a group meeting for weekly Bible study in a private home.
In North Carolina, a senior citizen apartment complex refused to allow one of its residents to advertise a weekly Bible study because the advertisement included the word "Bible".
A proposed Canadian law would make it a hate crime to quote the Bible's declaration that homosexuality is an abomination in the eyes of God. It would also make it a hate crime to preach Jesus' own declaration that "I am the Way, the Truth, and Life. No one comes to the Father, except through Me" (John 14:6). Violators would face fines and imprisonment.
But the most damaging attacks on the Bible are not coming from secular sources. They are coming from Evangelical churches, colleges, and seminaries.
Dr. Daniel Wallace, for many years professor of New Testament Studies at Dallas Theological Seminary, declares this - and I quote - "We do not have now - in our critical Greek texts or any translations - exactly what the authors of the New Testament wrote. Even if we did, we would not know it." He commends - and I am quoting him again - the "new generation of evangelical scholars [which] is far more comfortable with ambiguity and uncertainty than previous generations."
Megachurch pastor Andy Stanley has stated in a televised sermon that "It is a misguided assumption" to think that "the legitimacy of Christianity sits precariously atop a collection of errorless ancient texts."
Dr. John MacArthur has asserted that the last eleven verses of the Gospel of Mark do not belong in the Bible. He says that it is completely appropriate that the Gospel of Mark should end, not with the triumphant message of Jesus Christ's ascension, but with the statement that the disciples fled and "were afraid."
These three leaders, and many others within the Evangelical church, are communicating ambiguity and uncertainty about the Bible to this generation. They are sowing seeds of doubt about the Bible.
The unthinkable is happening: Attacks on the Bible from within what is supposed to be the Bible-believing church.
Bible-believing Christians must oppose these spiritually deadly attacks on God's Word.
How must we do that? We must proclaim Authentic Christianity, built on the foundation of Authentic Scripture. That is the mission of TeachingTheWord Ministries our worldwide Bible teaching and evangelistic outreach, and our research and educational arm, the Authentic Scripture Foundation.
The church of Jesus Christ must be the Scripture-driven church. We have God's inspired, inerrant Word. We can demonstrate beyond doubt that not a single word or letter of the original has been lost. On that basis, we seek to restore confidence in God's authentic Word.
